Ocean County will be paying the total cost for an upcoming project set to repair beaches in the Toms River area. Toms River officials had been urging Governor Murphy to cover costs since last summer, when the plans to replenish the beaches were announced. The towns surrounding beaches are responsible for the cost of beach replenishment work. However, since Toms River has had deficits in their beach operations in the last few years, funding was requested from the state. Other municipalities to receive similar assistance include Brick, Bay Head, Point Pleasant, and Seaside Heights among others.
Toms River officials were relieved and happy to hear that state assistance would be given. The beach replenishment project will follow initial construction done back in 2018 to mitigate effects of a hurricane. The goal is to address any damage found on the beachfront and maintain the beach construction presently in place. Tourism is a cornerstone of the Toms River economy with many beachgoers arriving in the area and supporting the town’s businesses.
