Upcoming Meeting Regarding Settlement for Ciba Geigy Site Scheduled for March 13, 2023

February 16, 2023 10:40 pm

The State Department of Environmental Protection will be hosting a meeting regarding the proposed settlement for the Ciba Geigy site. The meeting will take place in Toms River High School North’s auditorium on March 13, 2023. The program is scheduled to begin at 6pm. The purpose of the meeting is to provide information to the public and take questions regarding the proposed settlement.

Ciba-Geigy opened in the 1950’s and was in operation until 1990.The chemical plant dumped the toxic waste into the nearby river and ground. Many feel that the uptick of disease and deaths in the area were directly caused by the Ciba-Geigy plant’s mishandling of  the waste products.

A new settlement will allocate a large portion of the former chemical plant to be set aside for a restoration project. The land that is left over will be used for solar energy production. Comments and questions about the settlement may be submitted electronically at onrr@dep.nj.gov until April 5th.
