A medical outpatient veteran’s clinic is soon to be named after a Toms River war hero. The facility, located 1051 Hooper Ave in Toms River, offers specialty care in mental health, dentistry, podiatry and women’s health. Mayor Mo Hill has told Achdusnews.com in a recent interview, that he has been pushing for the building to be named after Leonard G. Lomell, a World War II army officer who fought in Normandy, and that this project is incredibly important to him.
Lowell, who was already injured by machine gun, fire led his forces on a mission to disable cannons that were aimed to keep American soldiers off the beach. Later in the war, Lowell and comrades took over Hill 400, a strategic hill location in Germany. He was again injured here, and later on as well, in the Battle of the Bulge.
When Lowell returned to the United States, he settled in Toms River and became an attorney, as well as a businessman. Lowell was also involved in Toms River community affairs. He was on the Board of Education and a trustee of the Ocean County College Foundation.
