Ocean County Vocational Technical School (OCVTS) recently opened its doors to prospective students and families, offering an inside look at its diverse career and technical education programs. The annual Open House, held across six campuses, drew an impressive 1,786 attendees, reflecting a growing interest in hands-on career training.

The event allowed visitors to engage directly with students and instructors, providing a firsthand glimpse into the real-world skills taught at OCVTS. Each campus highlighted its unique offerings, from trade and technical programs to health sciences and cosmetology.

At the Toms River campus, the Electrical Studies classroom replicated an active worksite, complete with structured frameworks, wiring components, and industry-standard tools. Meanwhile, the Marine Service Technology program gave guests the feel of a working boatyard, with students showcasing engine repair and maintenance skills.

The welding workshop was a hub of activity, where students demonstrated the precision and technique required in metal fabrication. The Cosmetology classroom resembled a professional salon, complete with styling stations and hands-on practice areas. Medical assistant and dental assisting students, clad in uniforms, showcased the professional training that prepares them for careers in healthcare.

As vocational education gains momentum, OCVTS continues to evolve to meet industry demands. In response to growing interest, the school has replaced traditional waitlists with a computerized lottery system for high-demand programs such as cosmetology, welding, and electrical trades.

The school’s Electrical Trades program, which serves high school juniors and seniors in a shared-time format, allows students to jumpstart their careers. The program counts toward apprenticeship hours, providing a direct pathway into the workforce. A post-secondary version of the program is also available, with plans to expand in Jackson due to high demand.

OCVTS is also one of the few schools offering Marine Service Technology, a program that equips students with the skills to maintain and repair boats and marine engines. Industry leaders have expressed a strong need for trained professionals in this field, making it an increasingly attractive career path.

With a mix of shared-time and full-time programs, OCVTS provides training in fields ranging from performing arts to automotive technology. Many programs offer college credit opportunities, and new courses in Bricklaying, Masonry, and Legal Studies have been introduced to further expand career options.

The success of this year’s Open House highlights the increasing recognition of career and technical education as a gateway to stable, well-paying careers. As industries continue to seek skilled professionals, OCVTS remains committed to providing students with the education and hands-on experience needed to thrive in today’s job market.
