Each year, the memory of Phil Citta is honored in a way that reflects his generosity and community spirit. The Office Restaurant & Lounge, a longtime local establishment, continues to pay tribute to its former owner through an annual fundraiser that has become a cherished tradition.
For the past two decades, Phil Citta’s Birthday Celebration has served as both a commemoration and a means of giving back. Proceeds from the event, including a portion of the restaurant’s net sales, along with donations and gift auctions, support the J. Phillip Citta Regional Cancer Center at Community Medical Center. Over 19 years, this initiative has raised an impressive $360,000, with an average of $20,000 collected annually.
The Office has deep roots in Toms River, initially opening in 1958 as the Toms River Hub under the direction of Joseph Citta, Phil’s father. When Phil took over in 1975, he rebranded the business, and it soon became a staple in the community, known for its welcoming atmosphere and commitment to service.
Phil Citta’s life was cut short by pancreatic cancer in 2004 at the age of 60. However, his impact extended far beyond his years. His family honored his legacy by making a $1 million donation to establish the cancer center that now bears his name, ensuring that local patients have access to critical treatment and care.
Nick Pagano, the restaurant’s general manager, has been a key figure in keeping Citta’s legacy alive. Having worked at The Office since he was a teenager, Pagano was not only a longtime employee but also a close friend of Citta. Following Phil’s passing, he proposed the idea of an annual fundraiser, which has since grown into a significant event for the community.
This year’s celebration once again drew a steady stream of supporters, filling the restaurant with energy and goodwill. Guests participated in raffles featuring prizes donated by local businesses, with all proceeds going toward the cancer center. Former employees and longtime patrons returned to reminisce, sharing memories of Citta and his unwavering dedication to others.
Beyond this annual event, The Office also contributes to other charitable efforts, including Red, White & Brew, a tasting event that showcases Ocean County’s top restaurants alongside beer and wine vendors. Over the years, this initiative has raised $1.6 million for the cancer center. The next event is scheduled for June 4 at the Toms River Country Club, with tickets available for $75.
Through both its ongoing community efforts and the work of the J. Phillip Citta Regional Cancer Center, The Office Restaurant & Lounge continues to embody the values Phil Citta stood for. Decades after his passing, his legacy remains deeply embedded in the heart of Toms River, proving that one person’s kindness can leave a lasting impact.
