This week, Achdus speaks with Reb Berl Kraus, father of Toms River resident Mrs. Miriam (Deutsch) Malek, who grew up in Hungary during World War II. Through this conversation, Reb Berl introduces us to a firsthand account of what life was like as conditions rapidly changed and families were forced to navigate an increasingly dangerous reality, from his early years in Hungary to the upheaval that followed.
Reb Berl shares memories from his childhood in Hungary, his escape to Budapest, and his time in the well-known Glass House, where many Jews sought refuge. He describes the constant uncertainty people lived with and the decisions that had to be made under pressure. He also reflects on what daily life looked like during those years as events unfolded around him.
