Multiple Toms River Fire Department members were dispatched to a large fire blazing in an apartment complex on Broad Street. A 64-year-old tenant was seriously injured and rushed to Cooper Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston for treatment. The fire occurred this past Tuesday, at approximately 10:20 AM.
After investigation, officials were able to pinpoint the source of the blaze. It originated from a lit cigarette found on a mattress in one of the apartments. The cause was ruled out from arson and foul play, and was deemed accidental in nature. Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer publicly acknowledged and thanked the many municipal firefighters, investigators, and volunteers who were of valuable help in their combined efforts.
