Jersey Central Power and Light (JCP&L) is attempting to modernize their electric distribution system. To that end, the company, which is a subsidiary of FirstEnergyCorp, will begin installing smart meters on customers’ homes and businesses throughout its service territory. Smart meters help ensure accurate readings and provide customers with the information that they need to manage their electricity use. In the event of a storm, it also allows power to be restored in a timely and efficient manner.
Smart meters differ from traditional electric meters in that they allow for two way communication and automated meter readings. They also ensure accurate billing each month, which customers are able to track to manage their electricity costs.
