The Ocean County Justice Complex is set to undergo renovations slated to cost approximately $70 million. This is a significant increase to the estimated $50 million proposed in March 2020. Some are questioning the logic of putting funding into a building that is in poor condition to start with. Sheriff Michael G. Mastonardy has been quoted as saying “The 1980’s era criminal justice complex on Hooper Ave is in poor condition” He openly questions the logic of adding anything onto it.
Commissioners would like to add a 4 story addition which would add 124,214 square feet of floor space to the existing justice complex. This addition is to be built on land that is now used as a parking lot.
In their presentation to the board the organizers announced the $70 million dollar cost. They explained that due to pandemic related inflation and supply chain issues the costs for the project have gone up . Other reasons include the inferior soil quality noted by a geotechnical engineer which need to be addressed as well as heavy mechanical equipment on site that will need to be relocated.
In addition to the increased floor space, the new complex is intended to reduce the number of public entrances to the compound. This measure is said to increase the overall security system in place and better protect the judges presiding within the complex on a daily basis.
