When the Ciba-Geigy site clean up began in 1996, it was estimated that it would take approximately 30 years for the polluted water beneath the property to be clean. Diane Salkie, a remedial project manager, for the federal Environmental Protection Agency, said on Tuesday, that she is doubtful that the 30-year goal can be reached.
Salkie said that, “Cleaning groundwater is a very slow process”. She estimated that the Plume, found under the site, had shrunk by 50%. The Plume contains chemical byproducts, including carcinogens trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene. The EPA still does not allow any new wells to be drilled in the area effected by the Ciba plume. (app.com)
