Back in June, Terrance Turnbach, a Democratic candidate who is currently seeking re-election in Toms River’s Ward 4, together with his opponent, Republican David Ciccozzi, had both pledged to run a campaign that was issue-based, as opposed to the typical smear campaign that often takes place during election time. However, Turnbach is now accusing Ciccozzi of breaking that promise, referring to a campaign flier that was sent earlier this month which claims that Turnbach is a “radical Democrat” who has voted to make Toms River a “sanctuary city.” The flier shows a photo of refugees at the U.S. southern border, a location over which Toms River’s council members have no control over.
The following statement was posted on Turnbach’s Facebook page:
“I would respectfully ask that the residents of Ward 4 in Toms River read this article and share it with their neighbors. The idea that my political opponent is indicating that he has no control over this mailer is insulting to all of us. This mailer was put out by his Clubs President and the very people that selected him to run for Council. A true leader would stand up and say that in retrospect the mailer was a mistake and went against what he had promised. If my opponent cannot say no to a mailer, how is he going to be able to say no to further requests to build ten story towers in our downtown?”
