As part of an upcoming feature, Achdus Magazine recently attempted to visit the Barnegat Bay Maritime Museum, located next to Toms River Town Hall in downtown Toms River, to learn more about the organization and its role in preserving local history. However, despite arriving during what appeared to be normal business hours, the museum was found completely closed, with no apparent activity on site.
The visit prompted further research into the museum’s ownership and operations. While some residents may assume the museum is operated by either Toms River Township or Ocean County, the museum itself is run by the Toms River Seaport Society, a private 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1976. The organization describes its mission as preserving the maritime heritage of Toms River and Barnegat Bay.
Ownership of the property appears to be somewhat more complicated. According to Ocean County materials, the land is owned by Ocean County, while the museum buildings were funded and constructed by the nonprofit Seaport Society.
Further research revealed that the museum is also listed by the National Maritime Historical Society. Following inquiries regarding the museum’s status and accessibility, representatives there indicated that they were planning a visit of their own and would be looking further into the matter.
At this time, many questions remain regarding the museum’s operating schedule and future accessibility to the public. Achdus Magazine will continue investigating and gathering information as part of its planned feature on this local institution.
Stay tuned for updates.
